Construction:
            The Towson Center Arena Addition is a basketball arena being built at Towson University.  It is approximately 116,586 square feet with three floors.  There are 5000 seats in the court area for sporting events.  The construction started in May of 2011 and is scheduled to be completed in March of 2013.  The General Contractor is Gilbane Construction and the delivery method is Design-Bid-Build.  The contract type is lump sum with a cost of 33.5 million.


Electrical:
The Towson Center Arena Addition’s electrical system is fed by a 15 kV service entrance from Baltimore Gas & Electric on the first floor.  The service goes into a 15 kV load interrupter switch and then to a 3000 kVA transformer.  The transformer steps the voltage down from 15 kV to 480/277V.  From there a 4000A main with a 35k AIC rated circuit breaker feeds the switchboard.  Then distribution, lighting, mechanical and electrical panels are fed.  Throughout the arena sixteen dry-type transformers step the voltage down again from 480/277V to 208/120V.  The emergency power system consists of three 150 kW natural gas generators.


Lighting:
The lighting system runs on a 480/277V electrical system.  Lamp types include linear fluorescent, compact fluorescent, metal halide and LED.  Out of 79 fixture types, the most common lighting fixtures in the arena use either linear fluorescent or compact fluorescent.  There are also many LED downlights, strip lights and handrails.  The lighting control system includes energy software, occupancy sensors and daylight harvesting.  The lighting control system software will include a graphical interface based on floor plans of the building that show real-time system status.  This includes on/off status, lighting levels and necessary maintenance issues.


Mechanical:
The mechanical system has an auto-occupied-unoccupied control system.  The Towson Arena has 10 AHUs and the Towson Center has 5 AHUs.  The motors range from 1.5 to 75 hp and all operate on 480V 3 phase power.  All of the fan motors are to be suitable with variable frequency drives.  There is a VAV system, ductless split system and energy recovery unit.  The Towson Arena has a 300 hp packaged hot water boiler and a 400 ton centrifugal type chiller.


Structural:
The structural system includes a steel moment resisting frame with lateral bracing.  There is composite steel decking supported by beams and girders.  The foundation system consists of spread footing and 6” concrete slabs.  Concrete beams use #5-10 rebar.  Reinforcing bars are ASTM A 615/A 615M, Grade 60, deformed.  Plain-steel welded wire reinforcement is ASTM A 185, plain, fabricated from as-drawn steel wire into flat sheets.  Portland cement is ASTM C 150, Type I/II, III.  The maximum coarse-aggregate size is 1 inch nominal, and the maximum crushed limestone size is ¾ inch.


Fire Protection:
The arena has a complete automatic fire protection system, including fire pump, wet pipe sprinklers and standpipes.  All work shall be in accordance with provisions set forth in NFPA 13, NFPA 14, NFPA 20, authorities having jurisdiction, and as indicated on the contract documents.  The fire pump boost pressure assumes that the 100 psi pressure requirement at the highest standpipe will be provided by the fire department truck on-board pumper.  The fire pump shall be arranged and sized to be horizontal split case type UL listed for fire pump duty at 500 gpm at 45 psi boost 1770 or 3520 rpm, 20 hp, 480V-3ɸ.  Fire pump, piping arrangement, and all appurtenances shall be in accordance to NFPA 20.


Transportation:
Elevators shall have a microelectronic control relay module to initiate elevator recall.  Elevator shafts and machine rooms shall have sprinklers and heat detectors actuated by temperature that exceeds 135 degrees F.  The three elevators serving the arena will have up to 4 landings, a rated capacity of 2500-4000 pounds, speed of 150 fpm, cab height of 9ft and an entrance height of 8ft.


Telecommunications:

            The Towson Arena will have voice, data, surveillance, cable, intercom and card reader communication systems.  Voice and data is spread out throughout the arena where needed.  Surveillance cameras are positioned around the arena.  Cable communication systems are of primary importance in the production and press room.  Card readers are located at entrances to rooms that are no desired for public use.
